Abstract
The purposes of this study were to develop a new scale designed to assess both positive and negative expected effects of internet game using factor analysis and to examine its internal consistency and concurrent validity in adolescents. 64 preliminary items were derived from 93 male high school students¡¯ responses to a survey of both positive and negative expected effects of internet game as well as existing expectancy questionnaires. On the basis of factor analyses of the preliminary items for 453 high school students (363 males and 90 females), 49 items were finally selected. The final version of an internet game expectancy scale(IGES) consisted of 23 positive and 26 negative expectancy items. Four factors labeled ¡°increase of self-confidence,¡± ¡°mood elevation,¡± ¡°resolution of negative emotions,¡± and ¡°facilitating social relationship¡± were derived from the positive expectancy items. Three factors labeled ¡°negative outcome in daily life,¡± ¡°addictive tendency,¡± and ¡°aggressive behaviors¡± were extracted from the negative expectancy items. The internal consistency was high for the IGES-Total, as well as for the IGES-Positive and IGES-Negative. The IGES-Positive was significantly correlated with the measures of internet game use, thus providing general support for its concurrent validity. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study as well as the utilization of the IGES were discussed.
